Visual novels are one of the most popular genres for indie developers to make games for, due to there being a fantastic free engine out there that helps people easily make visual novels, as well as the low amount of resources required relative to other genres. As a result, indie developers need to do something unique in this genre to stand out. Narcissu 1st & 2nd tackles this with a story that's more profound than most.

The first thing to note is that this is a visual novel in the truest sense of the phrase. It has absolutely no gameplay mechanics or even choices that are usually found in other visual novels. On top of that, there's very little art, with a ton of imagery that usually ends up as very simple splash pages. This game really emphasizes the novel part of visual novel.

However, it definitely makes up for it. The music is absolutely fantastic and the story is gripping. It involves following an unnamed protagonist being diagnosed with an incurable disease and being told to live in a hospital. He has to accept the drastic changes that has happened to his life and come to terms with the idyllic life that he lost without knowing it.

The game's message is to not take what you have for granted, and it's incredibly poignant for most people. Narcissu 1st & 2nd is an incredible experience despite its linearity.
