Visual novels are one of the most popular genres for indie developers to make games for, due to there being a fantastic free engine out there that helps people easily make visual novels, as well as the low amount of resources required relative to other genres. As a result, indie developers need to do something unique in this genre to stand out. Sepia Tears stands out as a rare, high quality free western visual novel in a time where that was lacking.

The premise is simple. You play as a young man who gets a dream about the main heroine, Myra, whose memories he has repressed for reasons unknown even to himself. Myra shows up out of nowhere and he doesn't recognize her, and they both work on finding out why.

The plot starts off extremely slow and ramps up over its roughly four hours of play. The payoff is rewarding, but considering that there are only 6-7 decisions to make throughout the game, many will probably run out of patience before they hit the payoff.

However, there are downsides. There are a lot of filler scenes that don't add anything to the main story, and some are even mysteries that distract from the main mystery. If you can look past that, however, then Sepia Tears won't disappoint. It comes packing enough heart and emotions to let you look past them.
