2D beat-em-ups have been steadily getting ignored by the AAA gaming industry, leaving it up to indie developers to take up the mantle. However, the progenitor of indie games, flash games, were the ones that popularized the genre in the first place. One of these is the Rage series. Let's look at the first entry.
To play Rage, simply run it with a Flash player of your choice.
This game has a surprisingly robust menu for a Flash game. There are two different game modes - Arcade and Adventure. Arcade is an endless high score generator while Adventure mode is more traditional levels. There's a shop where you can spend the money you earn naturally through gameplay where you can upgrade your character.
The controls are pretty surprisingly complex. Arrow keys to move, arrow key up to jump, arrow key down to grab items, D to proll, A and S to attack, E to shoot a gun if you have one, W to view your weapon inventory, and C to fire a massive laser beam when you're in rage mode. Rage mode is built up by attacking enemies and will cause you to be faster and stronger until it wears off.
All in all, however, Rage is a great game that's rough, but is still addictive enough to play for long periods of time.
