Retro style horror games do a fantastic job at unsettling us. Perhaps something about the ultra low detail graphics leaving more to the imagination scares us, or perhaps it's the occasional creepily detailed portraits contrasted with the incredibly low amount of pixels. Nevertheless, it's a genre all of its own nowadays, and Opossum Country is a great example of it.
To play Opossum Country, run the file in your Game Boy emulator of choice. Alternatively, go to the provided link in the warning to play it in your browser.
This game has you playing as a delivery man out to deliver food to somebody in a trailer park. However, the residents are all incredibly strange and hostile to outsiders. Despite this, however, you'll get to know them quite well in the fifteen or so minutes you'll spend playing the game. It makes the ending hit incredibly hard despite how short the playtime is.
The gameplay is pretty straightforward, with you walking around town and interacting with a variety of residents, with some occasional combat sequences where you have to aim, fire, and reload your gun. These aren't exactly hard, though.
All in all, Opossum Country is a very interesting and freaky game that is incredibly well written, and its low resolution graphics lends well to the feel of the game.
