Tower Defense games have generally fallen out of favor in the mainline gaming industry in the 21st century. There are very few tower defense games in the AAA market, and even if they're there, it's usually as part of a gimmick or a minigame. Thus, Flash games have had time to refine and innovate on the formula by themselves. One of the many series that have tried is the Monsters TD series. Let's look at the first game.

To play Monsters TD, just run it with whatever SWF player you have.

The first thing you'll notice is the unique perspective. This is a side-scrolling tower defense game, where they go from one side of the screen to the other while going up and down ramps. You have three basic tower types to place. Steam towers are good for just damaging whatever comes by, fire towers shoot a continuous laser at the enemies, and the eye tower will expose invisible enemies while slowing them down.

There is a ton of achievements, levels, and bosses. Once you play through a little too more, you'll also have unlockable skills to round out your customization options and modify your tower types among many other things like modifying your lives or gold.

All in all, Monsters TD is a very strong game and is surprisingly deep too, especially if you decide to play at a higher difficulty level.
