Tower Defense games have generally fallen out of favor in the mainline gaming industry in the 21st century. There are very few tower defense games in the AAA market, and even if they're there, it's usually as part of a gimmick or a minigame. Thus, Flash games have had time to refine and innovate on the formula by themselves. One of the series that codified the formula is Flash Circle TD.

To play Flash Circle TD, simply run the game with whatever SWF player you have.

You start off with five different categories of towers, some of which you'll probably remember from previous games, as they're mostly the same with slight balancing differences. One unique thing this game does is that it will no longer pause between waves. Buying and upgrading towers now takes place in real time. If you don't manage to dispose of all the monsters in a single wave, they'll circle around the map indefinitely However, if you let one hundred creeps stack up 

This completely changes the flow of the game and the strategy is now totally different. You now have to optimize killing enemies in the loop rather than simply destroying each wave as they come.

All in all, this is a fantastic tower defense game. You need to give Flash Circle TD a try if you like the genre.
