In 1997, Webfoot Technologies released a game called Deadly Rooms of Death. Its unique controls, gameplay flow, and puzzle style of dungeon crawling makes it incredibly unique even by today's standards. However, once the 3D age begun, they would drop support for the game, but let the original developer remake it in an open source model. Years later, ports of the series have finally come to the browser in a flash game format. Let's look at DROD: Episode 1.
To play DROD: Episode 1, just run it with whatever SWF player you have.
This episode consists of just four floors of monster-fighting action. While it may seem strange, you should use the numpad on your keyboard to control the game. If you're on a laptop without a numpad, there's a special modified control format for you to use. This is important because there are parts of the puzzle where you need to move diagonally and pressing two buttons at once isn't supported. You can also swing your sword by rotating it around with the QW keys.
Each level has puzzle switches and various monsters. The game is unique in that the monsters don't move unless you do, making it a turn based puzzle game. You need to use the layout of the room to take these monsters out, as you are almost always outnumbered.
All in all, this is a fantastic entry to a cult hit. If that sounds interesting, definitely give DROD: Episode 1 a download.
