Flash games were the precursors to many parts of the gaming industry today. The creativity and willingness to experiment has translated over to the indie games industry, many design elements that are used in AAA games today were first observed in flash games, and the casual nature of many flash games has translated over to the mobile game industry. One formula, the overhead survival shooter with upgrades as the game goes on, started in the Boxhead series. Let's look at Boxhead: The Zombie Wars.

To install Boxhead: The Zombie Wars, just run it with whatever SWF player you have.

The controls are simple. Use the arrow keys to move around, and the spacebar to fire your current weapon. You also have to use the 1-9 keys on your keyboard to swap your current weapon.

Your goal is to stay alive for as long as possible, and there are several ways to go about this. What's unique is that the weapon upgrade system is based on combos. The higher your combo, the more things you unlock. Getting a combo of 5 kills will get you a shotgun, but getting a combo of 500 will get you a nuclear strike. This is a lot different than the previous Boxhead games.

All in all, Boxhead: The Zombie Wars is a fantastic game with some nice ideas, with special battlefield modifying barricades.
