Final Fantasy basically codified the turn based JRPG format, with the formula lasting from the 80s to now with only some minor tweaks and streamlining to the system. It's also accessible enough that it can be applied to games with a variety of budgets - in fact, the famous RPG maker software makes it simple to make an RPG with barely any budget. However, there are some that tried to go further beyond before that engine came out - the Arkandian Legends series is one of them. Let's look at Arkandian Legends: Crusade.

This is a surprisingly sandbox game with a ton of depth. This is a turn-based RPG with defense elements. You have to create a hero and explore over sixty dungeons, complete with hundreds of items, magical spells, quests, and so much more. It's incredible just how much content is in here.

The bulk of the gameplay is split between adventure and defense. When you go adventuring, you'll be presented with a world map with possible adventure locales. Once you pick where to go, you'll control your character and gather materials that are used for crafting. Combat is turn-based and very similar to AdventureQuest. On the flip side, there are defense missions where your character is on a 6x6 grid, turning the game into a tactical affair.

You also don't level up traditionally. Everything you do will increase your proficiency in it instead of leveling up and allocating points. If you enjoy RPG games, you should play Arkandian Legends: Crusade.
