Wireshark is a free and open source packet analyzer, ok so right now it sounds like a special machine you may find while going through airport security and actually that analogy may be quite apt as it is used for troubleshooting and analyzing networks and software.

If you run a network you will want to be able to see what’s happening in it and to monitor it and Wireshark is designed for exactly that purpose it is probably more suited to small business networks rather than personal but it is a great tool for those who know how to use it, however it is not easy to learn it’s features and exactly what it is for unless you have some experience in this field, but if you do not have any experience there may be no reason for you to have any interest in Wireshark anyway however there are tutorials available and whilst it is not easy to learn everything you need to to make the most out of it, it is possible.

In regards to the people who are looking for a packet sniffer Wireshark is perfect it performs and perhaps even out performs similar programs that you would have to pay much more money for whilst it is absolutely free.

You can filter the displays so as only to see the types of traffic that you are interested in and although it is something of a steep learning curve there is useful color coded system to help you know exactly what information you are looking at.

Wireshark is very powerful for what it does and especially for being free but for a regular user who has no experience in these types of things you may want to do some research before using it, for the people who know how to use it then it is highly recommended.
