Final Fantasy basically codified the turn based JRPG format, with the formula lasting from the 80s to now with only some minor tweaks and streamlining to the system. It's also accessible enough that it can be applied to games with a variety of budgets - in fact, the famous RPG maker software makes it simple to make an RPG with barely any budget. However, there are some games that threw together complex systems without that engine. One of them is Relic.
To install Relic, just run it with whatever SWF player you have.
The first thing you'll notice is that this game is absolutely gorgeous. This game's beautiful hand drawn aesthetics match up to even the most modern indie games, which really come to life as soon as a battle starts. The game itself is incredibly streamlined and focused journey, with no detours into side quests at all. You move around the beautiful game world with the arrow keys or WASD depending on your choices until you hit a random encounter, at which point everything will become mouse controlled. The battle system is similar to Final Fantasy 7, with an ATB system where characters take their turn when a bar fills up, and it keeps filling up in real time.
There are some rough edges such as the inability to pause the game during battles, but otherwise, Relic is an incredibly solid and beautiful Flash game.
