Pokemon has always been one of the most beloved franchises in the world, even nearly two decades running. However, many fans can agree that the main entries of the video games have been getting a little...stale. It's felt like they've found the perfect golden formula and stuck with it for over a dozen years. Many have noticed that even a golden formula can get old after a while. However, the fan community always tries to fix perceived flaws on their own with fan games. Pokemon Phoenix Rising is one of these games.

The game is very limited so far, but what's there is genuinely one of the best fan games around. It aims to be an addition to the canon which tells its own story in an original Hawthorne region, with lore related to Ho-oh. This game has traditional RPG elements such as a quest log, which contains the usual main quests and sidequests as well as the backstory quests. There are also different moral choices the game throws at you as you that will lead to different endings and rewards, but this is still just a demo so it's not there yet.

While the content is light, I had more fun in the couple of hours playing this game than I did playing Sword and Shield. And that's saying something.

Overall, Pokemon Phoenix Rising pays homage to its parent series and adds plenty of its own to give it its own unique identity. Give it a shot if you've been getting a little tired of the Pokemon formula.
