Final Fantasy basically codified the turn based JRPG format, with the formula lasting from the 80s to now with only some minor tweaks and streamlining to the system. It's also accessible enough that it can be applied to games with a variety of budgets - in fact, the famous RPG maker software makes it simple to make an RPG with barely any budget. However, there are some that tried to go further beyond before that engine came out - the MARDEK series is one of them. Let's look at MARDEK RPG - Chapter 1.

To install MARDEK RPG - Chapter 1, simply run the file in whatever SWF player you have.

The game's graphics are fairly outdated, but intentionally so. It's meant to replicate the old pixelated graphics of the first JRPGs. Once you get into combat, however, you'll find that it's replaced with hand-drawn graphics that also look outdated, but still look fairly good.

The gameplay is also very much like an old JRPG. You have an overworld where you explore, purchase items, and interact with NPCs. You then have a battle system where you have to pick an attack option and then time your attack and defense to deal maximum damage.

The story of episode 1 is more like a prologue than anything. However, if you save after completing this episode, you can import it into the next episode where the story continues. A save import system like this is rare even amongst most AAA games so it was tulry a shocker to see a flash series using it.

Overall, MARDEK RPG - Chapter 1 is worth experiencing at least once.
