DOOM is one of the oldest FPSes in existence, and its engine is famously so robust that it can run on pretty much anything and also create pretty much anything. From FPSes to RPGs to companions to a city living game, it has a ton of different mods and maps that can all do different things. Some have created a series of maps that all share the same general flow and setting. One of those is Lunatic.
To install Lunactic, you need to have ZDoom and move the WAD file into the GZDoom folder, which is pretty par for the course for DOOM maps.
This series has fairly cramped gameplay, with small-sized maps and combat. This is to facilitate more of an arcade feeling rather than the modern shooters that saturate the market. The end result works well, with fast paced combat that moves forward extremely quickly. Its arcade feeling is so prevalent that I almost expected monsters to start dropping powerups.
To help with what he was going for, he also added two new enemies. One is a low hp zombie that will add more moving projectiles to the arsenal of enemies, and the second is a commando that fires rockets. Both are introduced early and force you to pay attention and stay on the move.
All in all, this series of maps is short and sweet. It won't last you a long time, but it will be incredibly fun while you're playing it. You should give Lunatic a download if that sounds like it will appeal.
