DOOM, over the years, has spread out to cover a ton of different genres through its insanely comprehensive modding scene. It's been a first-person dungeon crawling RPG, a game where you build a bond with a companion and some...interesting NSFW games. However, there are some fan-made games based on DOOM that don't rely on its ever so flexible engine. One of them is Doom, The Roguelike.
To install Doom, The Roguelike, simply run the executable.
One of the developers for this game is Derek Yu, who also created a great game recently called Spelunky. The first thing you'll notice is how accessible DRL is compared to a lot of other different roguelikes. The story is conveyed through text after completing certain levels. You are descending into a moonbase complex and destroying a hell portal that is infesting the area.
You start the game off by choosing three different classes that each have their own strengths and skills. You then name your character and set off on your quest. The gameplay is presented in a top-down isometric perspective and the combat is turn-based, but the pace is still extremely quick because of how fast the enemy moves after your action. Everything in this game is randomly generated with the exception of boss and special levels, leading it to have very high replayability.
Overall, Doom, The Roguelike is an incredibly interesting take on DOOM. It fits surprisingly well into the roguelike genre like it never left and is a great look at how flexible the setting actually is.
