Minecraft, by itself, is a fantastic game that has almost limitless possibilities. However, that doesn't mean that it has everything that players want from it. One particularly talented coder found the default biomes rather wanting and decided to create Biomes O' Plenty, a mod that adds a ton of different and unique biomes to the game all with their own mechanics and unique aesthetic.
To install Biomes O' Plenty, you'll need to have Minecraft Forge and then run the installer, starting Minecraft with the Forge Profile. Then, place it in the mods folder.
This mod has over 60 new biomes added to the game, ranging from a simple Marsh to the new Mystic Grove. Each of these biomes have new types of trees, plants, mobs, and items. For instance, there are new arrows such as the Bomb Arrow, Diamond Arrow, Dye Arrows, Egg arrow, Ender Arrow, and the Extinguishing Arrow. There are also new fauna such as butterflies, deer, dragonflies, pixies, snails, and turkeys. As you can tell, these aren't exactly fully realistic biomes - there are plenty of ones inspired by fantasy settings.
There are also new blocks and new recipes involving these new blocks, such as Flesh, Mud, Dead Wood, Origin Grass, Fir Wood, and Hellbark Wood. These blocks even work as materials for other mods as well, a rare feat considering how many industrial mods there are out there.
All in all, Biomes O' Plenty is a fantastic addition to the base game, and is a mod that only augments, not add.
