Thief is one of the most well-known cult classics in the gaming industry. Its incredibly well-realized stealth system as well as being focused less around combat and more around...well, stealing things. It was addicting finding ways to avoid guards and infiltrate the most guarded mansions to plunder its riches, all while hiding in the darkness. Well, some fans thought that the 2004 Thief release wasn't good enough and developed their own version over a few years called The Dark Mod.
To install The Dark Mod, make sure you have DOOM 3 on your computer and run the executable.
The gameplay is what makes this mod stand out. The AI is on par if not better than the original Thief AI. They can do a bunch of stuff outside of patrolling, like hanging out with each other over cards and eat food. Stuff like that makes them feel a lot more alive. They also carry torches and lanterns and have peripheral vision, and also notice when loot is gone, so they make for a tougher challenge than the base game's did.
The player character also moves much more fluidly and less jerky than the original games. You have to worry a lot less about
There are some drawbacks, though. As it's a low budget fan-made mod, there's not much dialogue to eavesdrop over, and what dialogue there is range wildly in quality. If you can look past these small flaws, however, then there's a lot to love in The Dark Mod, especially for fans of the stealth genre.
