The registry is an incredibly important part of the computer, and it degrades naturally over time. While there are a ton of programs out there to maintain it and patch it up, that's more like supergluing the cracks. Sturdy and reliable, but will still fail after a while. The safest way to maintain something is still to create a backup of it - one program that helps you with that is RegFileExport.

There is no installation process when it comes to RegFileExport. Just unzip it and that's it. It's an incredibly portable program. When you execute the file, there are a few locations that you can create a copy of. It is RegFileExport source_registry_file designation_registry_file registry_key. The program will assume the default location for each of them, and if they're in the same location, you need to specify and write down their paths too. 

The registry_key is optional. If specified, the app is instructed to extract only the key along with all containing subkeys in order to save them to file. The destination_registry may also be left unfilled, which means the new file will be created in the standard output.

Several examples are listed in the console window when calling the program's process without any arguments. While this program is definitely for professionals and veterans, there is almost no program out there like this.
