Ascension is a 2D psychological horror game you play as Atticus or Atty who has had to bring his sick daughter to work on the day of a terrible accident, whilst on your way to work in the elevator there is a power cut and you must find your way back in the darkness to save your daughter. It is advised at the start for the best atmosphere to play it alone in a dark room and while the graphics are nothing special the tension and atmosphere builds very cleverly building a sense of dread along with a soundtrack that is pretty nice whilst only helping to add to the eerie atmosphere. You are also advised to not think about winning the game but to immerse yourself in it which is some good advice to really enjoy this game and the horror it brings.
Whilst a 2D side scroller will never be able to pack the same kind of punch or jump scares as something like Five Nights at Freddie’s (or my personal favorite Pesadelo) it does do a lovely job of combining a platformer with a horror and makes for an innovative and different game unlike anything you may have played before.
